SRS Applauds American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) for EMR Position Statement

AAOS Declares Meaningful Use Irrelevant for Orthopaedists

MONTVALE, NJ--(Marketwire - August 11, 2010) -  SRS, the leader in productivity-enhancing EMR technology and services for high-performance specialty practices, today announced its strong support for the EMR Position Statement recently published by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS) in the August 2010 issue of AAOS Now. According to the Academy, "Orthopaedic surgeons will have great difficulty in meeting the current 25 meaningful use standards. Orthopaedics would derive greater benefits from standards promulgated by our medical specialty society rather than a set of generic requirements that mostly do not apply to musculoskeletal patient care."

The AAOS Position Statement also says, "The different needs and uses of EHR by disparate medical specialties should be recognized. In particular, the differences between surgical specialties and primary care specialties should be acknowledged." AAOS encourages physicians to "adopt well-designed EHRs; physicians should take the time to find the system most appropriate in terms of functionality and cost for their practices."

"It has been clear from the outset that primary care is the intended focus of the government's EMR program under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act," says Evan Steele, CEO, SRSsoft. "Because the government's certification criteria are primary-care-driven, EMRs that meet these specifications do not adequately address the needs of specialists like orthopaedic surgeons. The AAOS statement frees orthopaedists to adopt the EMR that they believe will best enable them to efficiently deliver high-quality patient care and service, rather than try to implement one built around requirements that are not relevant to their specialty. SRS has become the EMR of choice for orthopaedics by focusing on productivity and the needs of specialists."
