Team Bank Baring Brothers Sturdza Wins Hublot Polo Gold Cup Gstaad 2010

GSTAAD, Switzerland, Aug. 22, 2010 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The 15th edition of the Hublot Polo Gold Cup Gstaad finished today with a superb victory of the Team Bank Baring Brothers Sturdza over Hublot by 9 to 8 in an extra chukker. The third and the fourth place go to Star Design and Gstaad Palace respectively. The double finalist of the 2008 and 2009 tournament is maybe last, but certainly not least. Their performance was impressive all the more in that the team was totally reconstituted a few days before the opening of the tournament due to an accident with team captain Sacha Pictet. The highlight of this year's tournament was without any doubt Marcos Heguy (hcp 10), one of the world's best polo players, who scored 19 goals during the tournament, with 6 today in the final. All matches of the tournament were remarkable and exciting. The Hublot Polo Gold Cup Gstaad has again enforced its position as one of the best high-goal tournaments in Europe.

The beautiful weather and the high temperatures added to the overwhelming beauty of the site of the tournament. The public showed its excitement about this exquisite sporting performance and the superb setting by supporting the teams with enthusiasm.

Today's finals pitted the team Star Design against Gstaad Palace for the third and the fourth place and team Bank Baring Brothers Sturdza against Hublot for the first and second place. Third place was won by team Star Design. This team showed obvious strength and a perfect team spirit throughout the tournament. From the outset of this match, the tone was set by Milo Fernandez Araujo (hcp 8) who marked a goal in the first minutes. The game was particularly spectacular thanks to the excellent game of Augustin Martinez (hcp 4) and Federico Bachman's (hcp 6) outstanding and most beautiful goal of the tournament from the middle field. The Team Gstaad Palace delivered an excellent performance also, especially Alejandro Agote (hcp 8).

The last game of this year's tournament was one of the most exciting and brilliant performances. The players of the Hublot team played at their peak: Julio Coria (hcp 4) has played incredibly well in all matches and Franckie and Eduardo Menendez (hcp 7 and 6 respectively) showed that playing together since their childhood gives them a clear competitive advantage, Franckie marking 6 goals during the first two chukkers. Led by team captain Gualitero Giori (hcp 1), they were the strong "men in black" of the tournament. Team Bank Baring Brothers Sturdza was clearly dominated throughout the tournament by "the fox of Argentina" Marcos Heguy (hcp 10) one of the world's best polo players. Team spirit was keenly exhibited by its players. Gaston Lauhle (hcp 7) regularly opened the game for Heguy and the promising young Juan Pablo Jauretche (hcp 1) showed at the tournament that his handicap might well change soon. They all contributed to Heguy's golden goal in the extra closing chukker.

"We are extremely happy to be able to offer each year a polo performance of the highest level in Gstaad," says Pierre Genecand, President of the tournament. "I would like to thank our sponsors, partners and all the helpers and people involved in the organisation of this spectacular event and am looking forward to hosting this event again next year in August in Gstaad."
