King & Spalding Healthcare Practice Adds Gregory N. Etzel as Partner

HOUSTON, TX--(Marketwire - September 13, 2010) -  Today, King & Spalding announced the arrival of partner Gregory N. Etzel. Etzel, who will reside in the firm's Houston office, brings with him 14-plus years of experience handling complex litigation and regulatory matters within the healthcare industry.

"Greg is an outstanding lawyer with an excellent understanding of the healthcare industry," said Gary W. Eiland, a partner and leader of King & Spalding's Houston-based healthcare team. "Healthcare continues to be a strategic focus for the firm and Greg's arrival further demonstrates our commitment to the industry. His experience in federal administrative litigation augments the existing capabilities of healthcare lawyers in Houston, and the healthcare practice as a whole will benefit from the additional breadth, depth and bench strength he can provide."

Etzel's arrival is the latest addition to King & Spalding's highly regarded healthcare practice. Since 2007, the firm has added 28 healthcare attorneys, including leading healthcare lawyers in Houston, Washington, D.C. and Atlanta. The firm's healthcare group was ranked as one of the nation's best in the 2010 Chambers USA guide and, according to the American Health Lawyers Association (AHLA), is the country's largest.

Etzel's practice focuses on representing hospitals and other providers with healthcare regulatory matters and payment disputes. He has broad experience litigating complex Medicare reimbursement disputes and group appeals both in federal court and before administrative law judges and appeals panels. He also advises hospitals and other providers in efforts to recover payment for claims denied by Recovery Audit Contractors, Program Safeguard Contractors and other payment entities. Etzel assists providers in compliance-related matters including the risk assessment, investigation, and voluntary disclosure and repayment of identified healthcare overpayments and federal False Claims Act matters including both national initiatives led by the U.S. Department of Justice and individual qui tam actions. He also counsels hospitals and other health care entities on Medicare and Medicaid regulatory issues and in structuring transactions to comply with regulatory requirements. Over the course of his career, various ranking agencies and healthcare publications have identified him as one of the industry's leading legal professionals.

Etzel received a J.D. degree, magna cum laude, from the University of Houston Law Center, and a B.B.A. degree from the University of Texas. He comes to King & Spalding from the Houston office of Baker Hostetler.

"King & Spalding has put a great deal of effort into building a practice that meets the diverse needs of its healthcare industry clients," noted Etzel. "Combined with a growing Houston office and a strong national platform, the opportunity to move my practice there was one I could not pass up."
