Keller Rohrback Announces Investigation of Riddell, Schutt Sports, and Xenith LLC Regarding Football Helmets

SEATTLE, Feb. 4, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Attorney Advertising. Keller Rohrback L.L.P. (www.krclassaction.com) announces that it is investigating possible claims against football helmet manufacturers Riddell, Schutt Sports, and Xenith LLC, among others, for alleged misleading safety claims and deceptive practices related to the sale of new and reconditioned football helmets.

The investigation focuses on advertising claims about the safety and performance of football helmets in terms of reducing the risk of concussion, especially in children's helmets. The investigation also concerns helmet reconditioning companies which may be falsely representing that used helmets meet safety standards. Recently, United States Senator Tom Udall requested that the Consumer Product Safety Commission and the Federal Trade Commission ("FTC") investigate these alleged deceptive practices. In response to the "serious concerns" raised by Senator Udall, the FTC is reportedly investigating the helmet manufacturers' marketing claims.

The football helmets that are reportedly being reviewed include, among others, Riddell Revolution helmets, which are described on Riddell's website as showing a "31% reduction in the risk of concussion . . . when compared to traditional helmets." According to Senator Udall's letter to the FTC, "there is actually very little scientific evidence to support the claim that Riddell's Revolution helmets reduce the risk of concussion by 31 percent."

Additionally, Mike Oliver, executive director of the National Operating Committee on Standards for Athletic Equipment (NOCSAE) recently issued a warning to athletes and parents of athletes, advising: "[C]laims or representations that a particular helmet is anti-concussive or concussion-proof, without scientific support, can be misleading and dangerous."
