ATCO Gas Opens New Environmentally Friendly Operations Centre

AIRDRIE, ALBERTA--(Marketwire - June 14, 2011) - ATCO Gas today celebrated the official opening of its third new environmentally friendly operations centre. This latest operations centre is one of only a few commercial buildings in Canada, and the first in the City of Airdrie, to make use of geothermal heating, ventilating and cooling (HVAC) technology fuelled by natural gas.

The new 15,400 square-foot Airdrie facility utilizes natural gas, the cleanest burning fossil fuel, to run the heat pump geothermal system, reducing the amount of energy required to heat the building by approximately 33 per cent. This reduced energy consumption will also cut carbon dioxide emissions by a conservative estimate of 9.5 tonnes annually.

The new operations centre will be home to 45 employees who will continue to serve the needs of a growing Airdrie. ATCO Gas opened a similar, but larger operations centre in Edmonton last year and in Viking in 2009, using geothermal technology.
