Comtech Telecommunications Corp. Awarded $1.2 Million Order for Satellite Earth Station Equipment to Support Telecommunications Network Expansion in Africa

MELVILLE, N.Y., Aug. 24, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Comtech Telecommunications Corp. (Nasdaq:CMTL) announced today that its Tempe, Arizona-based subsidiary, Comtech EF Data Corp., was recently awarded a $1.2 million order for CDM-625 Advanced Satellite Modems. A telecommunications operator in Africa will utilize the modems to expand their satellite-based 2G/3G GSM and CDMA network.

The CDM-625 Advanced Satellite Modem combines advanced forward error correction, such as VersaFEC® and Low Density Parity Check codes, with the revolutionary DoubleTalk® Carrier-in-Carrier® bandwidth compression. DoubleTalk® Carrier-in-Carrier® is based on the patented bandwidth compression technology originally developed by Applied Signal Technology, Inc.  Using "Adaptive Cancellation" it allows the transmit and receive carriers of a two-way link to share the same transponder space. The combination of technologies offered in the CDM-625 enables users to minimize OPEX, maximize throughput and availability without using additional transponder resources and minimize CAPEX by allowing a smaller BUC/HPA and/or antenna.

"Given the CDM-625's multi-dimensional optimization, this operator can cost-effectively facilitate service expansion into remote areas," said Fred Kornberg, President and Chief Executive Officer of Comtech Telecommunications Corp.
