SPRINGFIELD, Ohio, Oct. 21, 2011 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Konecranes Machine Tool Service (MTS) level and alignment services have been designed to return a machine to original alignment specifications – an essential part of maintaining long term machine tool integrity and consistently producing quality parts.
During a complete geometrical refurbishment from Konecranes MTS, the machines are thoroughly examined for accuracy and performance. The slides are removed and the anti-friction bearing material is inspected for condition and wear. Anti-friction bearing materials such as: Turcite®, Rulon® or Moglice® are replaced. The machines ways are precision ground to meet or exceed original specifications for pitch, yaw and roll characteristics. The beds are then leveled to within 8-10 arc/seconds of pitch and roll using Konecranes Mahr-Federal electronic levels. The new anti-friction bearing material is hand scraped and precision fit to replicate the profile of the way surface and to attain geometrical compliance. The alignments are confirmed using Konecranes' state-of-the-art laser systems; including, but not limited to Konecranes Renishaw, Hamar or Faro tracker systems. The spindle bearings are replaced in accordance with ABEC recommended specifications. All seals and way wipers are replaced.
The existing lubrication system is reconditioned, repaired or replaced as required. Each way bearing surface are inspected to ensure proper oil flow and volume. Konecranes MTS aligns machines according to a variety of formats; including, but not limited to: NMTBA, ASME B5.54 or ISO-230 specifications. If the way system is a linear guide or roller pack application Konecranes MTS will replace the existing linear guide rails, trucks and roller packs. The rails are installed and aligned using our laser systems as with the box way systems.
Konecranes MTS excels in the art of precision hand scraping in order to attain optimum geometrical results. Considered a lost art by many, hand scraping is still taught and regularly performed at Konecranes MTS. Precision hand scraping is the repetitive exercise of rubbing the slide to replicate the way profile which produces spots called contact points or bearing. Although this process is methodical and time consuming, it is essential in order to equally distribute the load contact points and promote long term geometrical integrity. Although the craft is not widely taught, it still has value in today's manufacturing sector. "Our scraper hand literally scrapes the metal with a carbide-tipped scraping tool. The scraper hand meticulously scrapes (or picks) the bearing spots until a surface contact of 60% to 70% coverage is obtained," says Harold Schoch, Key Accounts Manager, Konecranes MTS.
Great care is taken to equally distribute the load carrying points to avoid galling or scoring of the ways and promote long term geometrical integrity. Power spotting (Flaking) is typically performed at the completion of the scraping process and produces the half moon appearance that insures adequate channels for oil distribution.
