NaviNet and CoverMyMeds Improve E-Prescribing Through New Electronic Prior Authorization Management Solution

BOSTON, MA--(Marketwire - May 3, 2012) - NaviNet, America's largest real-time healthcare communications network, serving more than 121 million covered lives, and CoverMyMeds, the leader in prior authorization tools for doctors and pharmacies, announced today that they have entered into a strategic partnership to offer a multi-payer solution for electronic drug prior authorizations (ePAs).

Prescribers, clinical staff, and support staff will be able to use NaviNet to respond to ePA requests generated through most U.S. pharmacies. Support for prescription drug prior authorizations is offered as an extension of NaviNet's medical prior authorization process.

Starting today, health plans and pharmacy benefit managers (PBMs) may contract with NaviNet for electronic interchange of ePAs using one of the several candidate standards being evaluated by members of the National Council for Prescription Drug Programs (NCPDP). NaviNet and CoverMyMeds will work closely with payer partners to leverage the NCPDP's emerging standards to drive ePA adoption in the marketplace.

"CVS Caremark has been a leader in developing an electronic prior authorization solution for the industry and welcomes working with NaviNet and CoverMyMeds in supporting our ePA program," said Allison Orenstein, Director of Physician Connectivity, CVS Caremark. "By offering providers access to real-time submission and response for their prior authorizations, patients have faster access to their medications so that they can start on their path to better health."

"We believe that prior authorization is a necessary cost containment tool, but it can be an administrative burden for pharmacists and doctors," said Ron Fine, VP National Health Plans, CoverMyMeds. "Our partnership with NaviNet aligns the interests of payers and providers by deploying the only multi-payer ePA solution available to the largest network of providers in the nation. At the same time, pharmacies benefit from a seamless connection to the doctor's office for PAs. We're eliminating administrative waste so that doctors and pharmacists don't need to choose between patient care and paperwork."

"Our partnership with CoverMyMeds enables NaviNet to expand our established success in streamlining complex workflows," said Jocelyn Keegan, Product Manager, Drug Authorizations, NaviNet. "Drug authorizations will allow pharmacy benefit managers, pharmacists, and providers to quickly and securely share the critical clinical and patient-specific data necessary to drive the fast, high-quality decisions required to get the right drug into patients' hands today."
