Hurd Spotlighted in ABC World News 'Made in America' Story

Wisconsin Company Touted for Its US-Built Doors and Windows Which Have Been Exported to More Than 30 Countries Worldwide

MEDFORD, WI--(Marketwire - Sep 24, 2012) - ABC World News Tonight with Diane Sawyer shined a spotlight on Hurd Windows and Doors for a "Made in America" feature airing Thursday, September 20, 2012. The Medford, Wisconsin-headquartered manufacturer was included in the story that highlighted US-based businesses that are making a domestic and global economic impact.

Hurd, which has built custom wood windows and doors for more than 90 years, was recognized in the national news story for competing on a global basis out of its Midwestern manufacturing facilities in Medford and Merrill, Wisconsin. As part of the segment, Hurd Vice President of Product & Service Stu Brown cited examples of windows that were being exported to China and Canada. In fact, Hurd has exported products to more than 30 countries around the world, including Japan, Turkey, Israel, Philippines, Argentina, Ireland, Poland, India and Thailand.

Hurd nationally markets all wood and clad wood windows and patio doors through a network of more than 400 distributors serving the residential and light commercial construction markets. Hurd's sister company, Superseal, markets vinyl replacement and new construction windows that are manufactured in the Merrill facility.

A large group of Hurd's Medford-based employees were also featured in the piece, showcasing some of the products that they had a hand in building. "Our workforce has grown 10 percent in the last year," explained Hurd President Dominic Truniger. "In fact, in the past 18 months, we've grown our workforce by 25 percent."

ABC reported that for the first time since the 1930s, US manufacturers have the export advantage in the global marketplace. This is attributed to the fact that US workers are considered the most productive workers in the world, making the US as much as 45 percent less expensive than its foreign competitors. The story went on to say that new technologies are unlocking energy reserves, which is lowering US energy costs. It also noted that shipping from US ports is cheaper than from its international counterparts.

Truniger added, "We take a great deal of pride in our American-made products and our global marketing reach." He noted that earlier this year, Hurd was named 2012 Exporter of the Year in the Building/Construction/Hardware category by ThinkGlobal Inc., publisher of the U.S. Department of Commerce's Commercial News USA.
