MetaMetrics Partners With Highlights Magazine to Reach Beginning Readers

Lexile Measures and Highlights Help Early Learners Improve Reading Skills

DURHAM, NC--(Marketwire - Nov 5, 2012) -  MetaMetrics®, developer of The Lexile® Framework for Reading, today announced its partnership with Highlights for Children. The family media brand's flagship magazine, Highlights, offers a variety of captivating fiction and fascinating nonfiction stories that also encourage reading growth. Magazines from Highlights are the best-read children's magazines in North America, with more than 2 million subscribers.

Fostering creativity and imagination while developing reading, cognitive and reasoning skills, for decades Highlights has remained a popular subscription for young audiences. In 2006, the company celebrated its 60th anniversary with the one-billionth copy of the magazine being printed.

Highlights has a magazine perfect for every age and every stage. Parents can informally monitor their children's reading ability by examining the Lexile® measures of the articles their children read. With Highlights, for ages 6 to 12 years old, children enjoy reading targeted text while learning. Highlights also offers Highlights Hello, for ages 0-2, and High Five, for ages 2-6.

"With our continued research and work in the 'Beginning Reader' field, we could not be more thrilled about our partnership with Highlights," states President and Co-founder of MetaMetrics, Malbert Smith III, Ph.D. "Our established team of psychometricians and reading experts have dedicated years to studying early and emergent readers with the Lexile Framework so that even the youngest learners can benefit from our popular reading metric. We applaud Highlights for helping children engage in targeted reading."

"We are very excited about our partnership with MetaMetrics," said CEO of Highlights for Children, Kent Johnson. "When kids get authentic reading material that is appropriate to their skill level and their interest, it helps to set them on the path toward a love of reading."

The Lexile Framework is a unique tool for accurately matching readers with text. Recognized as the most widely used reading metric, the Lexile Framework is based on more than 20 years of research funded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development. Their distinct approach to measuring readers and texts has resulted in Lexile adoptions by departments of education in nearly half the states and school districts in all 50 U.S. states, and a global reach that continues to expand.

Unlike other measurement systems, the Lexile Framework evaluates reading ability and growth based on actual assessment results, rather than generalized age or grade levels. Tens of millions of Lexile measures are reported annually from reading assessments and programs. Lexile measures help teachers, librarians and parents find books, articles and other resources within a reader's recommended Lexile range.
