Victorville Chiropractor Treats Veterans Through VA's Outpatient Program

VICTORVILLE, Calif., Dec. 23, 2012 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Victorville chiropractor, Dr. James Boehmer, says that Life Chiropractic is making it easier for veterans to receive care for service-related back pain, sciatica and herniated disc injuries. The Veteran's Administration's outpatient program enables eligible service members to be reimbursed for chiropractic treatment and rehabilitation services once they get a referral from their primary care provider, along with VA authorization. According to Dr. Boehmer, many veterans suffering from musculoskeletal injuries and repetitive stress injuries are currently receiving non-invasive chiropractic care and other therapies at the center under the new program.

The Victorville chiropractor is enthusiastic about this program to help veterans. "Military life can be very hard on the body, and these men and women have put their bodies on the line for the good of everyone. We are glad to participate in this program so that we can help them heal and get natural, long-term pain relief for the injuries they've sustained during their service."

Surprisingly, says Dr. Boehmer, about half of the veterans he treats suffer from work-related back pain comparable to the kind of backaches civilian-sector workers experience. He says each case is different, but heavy lifting, training and vehicular accidents in the field contribute to stresses on the body that cause spinal misalignments. These misalignments, he says, can pinch nerves that cause pain in the back, legs and other areas. He mentions that whiplash is another common injury he treats in veterans. The result of sudden movement of the head and neck, this injury can cause neck pain, headaches, vision disturbances, fatigue and mood swings.

Dr. Boehmer explains that the center provides several treatment options for veterans depending on their needs. He usually prescribes spinal adjustments combined with therapeutic exercises to retrain muscles for long-term postural correction. He says that correct spinal alignment releases pinched nerves and relieves pain. Dr. Boehmer adds that almost a quarter of the veterans he treats suffer from injured intervertebral discs. Spinal decompression therapy, he explains, is a treatment that has helped several of his veteran patients avoid back surgery as a non-invasive alternative for treating herniated disc injuries that often cause severe sciatica.

Dr. Boehmer says that veterans should talk with their primary care physicians to discuss chiropractic care options that may help them. "A referral from the doctor and an authorization from the VA is all we need to get started on a treatment plan. We really enjoy working with our veteran patients and are proud to have helped so many of them get the natural relief and healing they need and deserve."
