NEW YORK, NY and SAN FRANCISCO, CA--(Marketwired - May 20, 2013) - SquareTrade®, the #1 rated protection plan trusted by millions of happy customers, today announced the results of its first Drop Test for cameras, which was held early Sunday morning at B&H Photo Video's super store in New York City. The event tested the two leading semi-professional cameras -- the Canon EOS Rebel T5i and the Nikon D5200, for durability and resilience in common accident scenarios that both professionals and amateurs encounter. "In today's society where we are all multitasking, juggling our camera, phone and tablet all at once, drops, spills and accidental damage are a growing problem for everyone -- in particular photographers," said Yossi Fogel, B&H's Director of Photo Sales. "I'm always hearing the story of the unintended spill or the unexpected fall while trying to get that perfect shot or just downloading some images to your tablet or laptop. I've seen some of SquareTrade's 'drop test' clips, so when they approached me about drop testing cameras I thought it was a great idea (even though I really do feel bad for the cameras). I think it gives our customers an idea of just how much can happen and whether you should consider buying a protection plan for your equipment."
In SquareTrade's Camera Drop Test, the Canon EOS Rebel T5i and the Nikon D5200 were dropped from approximately four feet using the SquareTrade Drop Bot, an apparatus designed to drop objects from the same height and angle at precisely the same moment. The following results were noted:
- The lens of both cameras broke away leaving each useless
- With replacement lenses, both cameras became operational showing no signs of internal damage
- While the Nikon camera sustained noticeable body damage, the body of the Canon coped with the drop test impact
- In the test, Canon was shown to be the most resilient to accidental damage
"As we head into the summer, many of us are thinking about upgrading our camera and video equipment -- whether for professional or personal use. There's not a lot of information out there about how cameras respond to the drops and spills that go along with ordinary use," commented SquareTrade CMO Ty Shay. "Our Drop Test at B&H's super store yesterday brings camera enthusiasts new and useful information. And what better place to hold our first camera Drop Test than at B&H headquarters -- the world's mecca for photo enthusiasts."
