Detroit, June 5, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- In April of this year, more than 10,000 students from around the globe travelled to St. Louis, Mo. to participate in the 2013 FIRST Robotics Championship held at the Edward Jones Dome.

Three teams, from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada; The Woodlands, Texas; and Toronto, Ontario, Canada won the coveted FIRST Robotics Competition (FRC) Championship Winning Alliance. In this year's game, ULTIMATE ASCENTSM, two Alliances made up of three teams each try to score as many flying discs into their goals as possible during the two-minute and 15-second match.
This year General Motors sponsored approximately 70 teams, one of which, Team 1241, THEORY6, from Mississauga, Ontario, Canada; was part of the championship winning alliance.
GM joins FIRST in their mission to inspire young people to be leaders in science and technology and links engineering and science mentors from industry to students.
FIRST Robotics was founded by inventor Dean Kamen. The acronym FIRST represents For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology. In other words, getting kids to see the fun they can have and the good they can do with science and technology.
