Dixie Electric Membership Cooperative Deploys Exalt Systems for High Performance and Reliability in Hurricane Country

Exalt Systems Connect Substations to Core Fiber Network, Stand Up to Hurricane-Force Winds and Rain

CAMPBELL, CA--(Marketwired - Jul 24, 2013) - Exalt Communications, Inc., the leading innovator of next-generation packet microwave backhaul systems, today announced that Dixie Electric Membership Cooperative (DEMCO) of Greenwell Springs, LA has deployed Exalt microwave backhaul systems to carry SCADA, Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI), Advanced Meter Reading (AMR), two-way radio, and other advanced applications data from remote substations and district offices to its core fiber network. The Exalt microwave systems provide reliable, high-performance connectivity in all weather conditions including hurricanes.

DEMCO provides electrical service to more than 100,000 homes and businesses in seven parishes in and around Baton Rouge, Louisiana. The company chose Exalt systems to upgrade its connectivity between substations and district offices and its core fiber backbone, replacing older microwave units that were not as reliable.

"We wanted reliable connectivity to our fiber backbone, and our older microwave systems were not making the grade," said Shawn Parker, electronics and communications crew leader at DEMCO. "Exalt offers the reliability and performance that's critical to our business, with outstanding technical support."

Exalt partner Deep South Communications of Baton Rouge, LA deployed the systems. The Exalt split-mount systems deliver both native T1 and native Ethernet capacity to each substation and district office, providing more than enough bandwidth for power distribution applications. Despite hurricane-force winds on at least two occasions, the Exalt systems have remained reliable.

"Electric cooperatives like DEMCO are the first-responders in weather and other natural disaster emergencies because power must be restored before people can begin putting their lives back together," said Joe Schraml, Exalt vice president of product line management. "These cooperatives need microwave backhaul systems that are reliable under all conditions, and Exalt systems deliver the highest reliability and performance for these companies and the communities they support."
