American Science and Engineering, Inc. Receives $4.5 Million Order for Z Portal and Gemini X-ray Systems to Secure Checkpoints at Middle Eastern University

Systems Will Be Used to Screen Cargo and Parcels at Science and Technology Center

BILLERICA, Mass., Oct. 1, 2013 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- American Science and Engineering, Inc. ("AS&E") (Nasdaq:ASEI), a leading worldwide supplier of innovative X-ray detection solutions, announced today that it has received a $4.5 million order for multiple Z Portal® multi-view cargo screening systems and Gemini® parcel inspection systems from ESE Co., a security system distributor in the region. The systems will be used to protect the science and technology center of a university in the Middle East.

"AS&E's inspection systems will play a critical role in securing a key facility on the campus of one of the most prestigious universities in the Middle East," said Chuck Dougherty, President and CEO of AS&E. "With the need for heightened security on campuses globally, our Z Portal and Gemini systems will protect students, faculty, and infrastructure by closely inspecting all cargo and parcels entering the campus for metallic and non-metallic threats and contraband."

Z Portal High-Throughput Cargo & Vehicle Screening System

The Z Portal system is the most comprehensive screening system available with multi-view, drive-through screening for left, right, and top-down imaging of cars, vans, trucks, and their cargo. The Z Portal system's patented Z Backscatter technology provides superior detection capability of explosives, drugs, stowaways, and other contraband. With its compact design, the Z Portal system is ideal for high-traffic locations with space constraints and a high-throughput requirement and is safe for drivers, operators, cargo, and the environment. The relocatable screening system is available in two sizes — one for large trucks, buses, and cargo vehicles, and a smaller size for passenger vehicles. Customers include the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Customs and Border Protection, Abu Dhabi Customs, and NATO.

Gemini Multi-Technology Parcel X-ray Inspection System

AS&E's ground-breaking Gemini systems provide the most comprehensive threat detection available for hand-carried items, mail, parcel, and baggage screening. Available in multiple tunnel sizes, the Gemini systems offer the unique capability to simultaneously detect both metallic and non-metallic threats—even in cluttered environments. The systems feature a combination of dual-energy transmission and Z Backscatter X-rays, two complementary, advanced, and commercially-proven technologies. The Gemini systems' dual-energy transmission X-rays generate a colorized, high-resolution image, easily detecting metallic threats – such as guns and knives – and fine details, including tiny wires which could indicate an IED. Dual-energy also provides organic and metallic discrimination in uncluttered environments. Gemini's Z Backscatter X-rays generate an image that provides enhanced detection of organic materials, such as explosives, drugs, and plastic weapons. Together, Gemini's two technologies provide the most information available about the contents of a parcel.
