MetaMetrics Launches New Lexile "PowerV" Word Selector

Free Tool Provides Readers With Book Specific Lists of Challenging Vocabulary Words

DURHAM, NC--(Marketwired - Oct 16, 2013) - MetaMetrics®, developer of the widely adopted Lexile® Framework for Reading, is pleased to announce the launch of PowerV®, a new vocabulary tool on Lexile.com. PowerV provides level-appropriate vocabulary lists for over 50,000 books by identifying up to 10 challenging words in each book that are important for students to know. Lexile.com users can access the PowerV tool by visiting an individual book detail page when performing a search using "Find a Book" or the Quick Book Search tool.

PowerV uses four criteria to identify words: words that have Lexile word measures 50L to 250L higher than the Lexile text measure of the book, words that appear more frequently in the particular book than in texts generally, words that are academic and have been identified as important for success in school and words that have a number of prefixed and suffixed forms that allow students to apply word knowledge based on other forms of the word. Educators can use the tool to select words for vocabulary instruction, while parents and students can use the tool to identify words students might want to explore before reading a particular book.

"Every day we continue to research and develop new tools to help our nation's educators improve their students reading ability and prepare them for their academic pursuits," said A. Jackson Stenner, Ph.D., CEO and co-founder of MetaMetrics. "The new PowerV vocabulary tool was designed to better prepare readers for the text at hand by facilitating vocabulary acquisition."

The Lexile Framework is a unique tool for accurately matching readers with text. Unlike other measurement systems, the Lexile Framework evaluates reading ability and growth based on actual assessment results, rather than generalized age or grade levels. Lexile measures help librarians, teachers and parents find books, articles and other resources within a readers recommended Lexile range: 100L below to 50L above his or her Lexile measure. Reading materials within this optimal Lexile range will challenge the individual's reading ability, while still maintaining interest and learning.
