Each learning adventure is an opportunity to go behind the scenes, interact with the local people and savor authentic meals and culture that reveal a place's true character. Like thousands of Road Scholar participants, California Native Jean Mahoney, 64, has opted to dig deeper into her own home state this year. Jean's roots in the Delta region of Northern California go back multiple generations, and she was eager to learn more about the area where her great grandparents owned a pear and asparagus farm in the late 1800s. This winter, Jean and her wife traveled the short distance to the Delta to participate in Road Scholar's Birding and Ecology in the California Delta by Boat (www.roadscholar.org/16891).
"California is so big that you don't have to get on a plane to feel that you're experiencing something totally new and unique," she says. "Not only did I get an incredible education on the history of the Delta, I met a couple on the program whose ancestors were also connected to the Delta. We have since exchanged photographs and emails and are convinced that our ancestors probably knew each other. It was such a joy to discover this connection on a Road Scholar program."
