BOSTON, MA--(Marketwired - Apr 28, 2015) - The summer travel season is coming up fast and, with the strength of the U.S. dollar, many are touting this as the year for a European vacation. No doubt your travel dollars will go farther abroad this year than in any time in recent memory. However, there are still some big swings in affordability among destinations. To give you a leg up on getting a deal, the travel experts at Cheapflights.com, the online leader in finding and publishing travel deals, have run the numbers and ranked the most-searched European airports based on their affordability for travelers from the U.S.
As with all of our Airport Affordability Index reports, our rankings are a snapshot of prices. In this report, we've calculated the average airfares based on the prices our users found when searching for flights leaving from top destinations across the U.S. in the first three months of 2015. The findings are great news for those looking to travel to Ireland, Italy or Spain as airports in those countries take six of the top eight slots on the list. Across the board, airports in the Eurozone fared well in contrast to those on other currencies. Six of the eight lowest-ranking airports have their own local currency. And, as is often the case, the best fares are not to the biggest or busiest of airports -- an important reminder to think alternatively when planning travel, even overseas.
"Recent news reports have been illustrating the buying power of the U.S. dollar in Europe," said Melisse Hinkle, Cheapflights.com editor and travel expert. "From bar tabs to hotel rates to airfares, prices favor U.S. travelers right now. And, of course, savvy travel planning will still help you go farther, stay longer and do more for less. Our advice, as always, is to do your homework and be as flexible as possible about where and when you travel. Prices always vary by exact departure points and dates, but our data makes it clear that a little comparison shopping can pay off."
