SMART Modular Announces DDR4 NVDIMM Support for Supermicro(R) X10 SuperServer(R) and SuperStorage Platforms

NEWARK, CA--(Marketwired - May 11, 2015) - SMART Modular Technologies, Inc., a leading designer, manufacturer and supplier of specialty memory and storage solutions, including memory modules, flash memory cards and other memory and solid state storage products, announced today DDR4 NVDIMM support for Supermicro X10 series of server and storage motherboards. SMART's DDR4 NVDIMMs with SafeStor™ technology help improve performance by creating a section of persistent memory with high speed DRAM access speeds for data-intensive applications. Big data, transaction logs, and other latency and performance-sensitive data can be stored to, and loaded from, NVDIMM memory to dramatically improve application performance without the risk of data loss.

SMART's DDR4 NVDIMMs, available in 4GB, 8GB, and 16GB densities, have gone through rigorous testing to ensure compatibility and sustained support with Supermicro X10DRC-LN4+, X10DRH-I, X10DRi motherboards and server/storage solutions including FatTwin™, TwinPro™, Ultra, and upcoming X10DRS based Super Storage Bridge Bay (SBB). These systems have the hardware and BIOS configuration which allow NVDIMMs to be recognized when they are plugged into the system. NVDIMMs combine DRAM and Flash onto a single DIMM and function as standard RDIMMs in normal operation modes. These modules contain switches that transfer control back and forth between the system and the NVDIMM controller in the event of a power loss. During such an event, the NVDIMM controller backs-up data from DRAM to Flash. When power is restored, the system BIOS directs the NVDIMM controller to restore data from Flash back to DRAM, making the same data that was present at power loss available to applications after the system re-boots.

NVDIMMs eliminate the overhead of block I/O software stacks and instead provide DRAM speed and low-latency write performance to persistent storage. In this capacity, NVDIMMs have all the benefits of SSDs while providing the same performance and endurance features.

Persistent memory in servers is being used to improve general system performance for specific application speed-up. Now, rather than reading/writing big data or transaction logs to traditional storage media such as SATA SSDs, PCIe NVMe SSD, or HDDs, this data can be written to, and read from, NVDIMM memory without the risk of data being lost due to a power failure. Server performance in terms of lower latency, higher IOPS, and greater endurance are all dramatically increased.

"SMART is pleased to support Supermicro's X10 series of server and storage motherboards with NVDIMMs that help to improve latency performance," stated Mike Rubino, SMART's Vice President of Engineering. "SMART is continuing to help drive NVDIMM standardization efforts underway within the JEDEC hybrid DIMM task group."

"Supermicro has enabled NVDIMM technology across our platforms to reduce latency and deliver higher IOPS through persistent memory for mission critical, data-intensive applications," said Don Clegg, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development at Supermicro. "We are pleased to work with SMART on leading edge memory technologies that provide the industry with greater performance, flexibility and reliability when deploying our NVDIMM optimized Server Building Block solutions."

SMART's DDR4 NVDIMMs are offered in two configurations; 1Rx8 in 4GB and 8GB densities, and 1Rx4 in 8GB and 16GB densities. For further information please contact Arthur Sainio at arthur.sainio@smartm.com or visit www.smartm.com.
