Waitrose Deploys Apigee's API Management Software to Help Build Deeper Relationships With Customers

Popular UK Supermarket Chain Leveraging APIs and Apigee to Create Connected Digital Experiences That Integrate In-Store and Online Shopping

SAN JOSE, Calif., June 23, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Apigee® (Nasdaq:APIC), developer of an intelligent API platform for digital business, announced today that Waitrose, recently named the "Nation's Favourite Food Retailer"1 in the UK, has selected the Apigee Edge API management software as key enabling technology for its digital transformation. Waitrose is using APIs (application programming interfaces) and Apigee to build a range of innovative applications that deliver new connected digital experiences for its employees and customers.

Waitrose is leveraging Apigee to help differentiate itself from competitors by delivering applications that integrate in-store and online shopping and make it faster and easier to find, manage and buy Waitrose items. The retailer's initial APIs, which have gone live, enable employees to gain mobile access to product information within store, bringing improved customer service to the shop floor. Future consumer-facing mobile experiences will be underpinned by the Apigee platform and will go live in summer 2015.

Harry Strover, head of IT Strategy & Architecture at Waitrose, said: "Customers have a range of different requirements when they enter a store, whether it be looking for the latest product information, checking out the latest reviews and prices, or simply making a purchase. It's vital that we integrate all of these activities and deliver a personal and relevant experience around them, helping us to establish deeper relationships with our customers and engage with them in the way that works best for them.

"We want to be at the forefront of digital and Apigee is a key enabling platform for our digital transformation going forward. By managing, securing, analyzing and scaling APIs, Apigee can increase the speed at which we deliver digital experiences in a very competitive market. Apigee's analytics capabilities will be key to measuring customer adoption and use and will allow us to further enhance the customer experience in-store and online."

"Food retailers are operating in a time of great change in the UK supermarket industry, driven by the rise of convenience, online shopping, mobile and changes in shopping habits," said Ed Anuff, vice president of product strategy at Apigee. "They need to be able to adapt and innovate quickly, flexibly and efficiently in order to better engage with their customers.

"Mobile provides new opportunities for retailers to have more meaningful interactions with customers through services such as geo-location, personalized offers and loyalty programs. Waitrose is one of the UK's most popular retailers, and we look forward to helping it deliver an even better experience for its customers and employees through digital."

APIs are a key technology for businesses in today's digital world. Behind every mobile app, smart device and connected experience sits at least one API, enabling software applications to exchange data and "talk" to other applications. Apigee's intelligent API platform helps businesses use APIs to securely share data and services across devices to serve customers in a real-time, anywhere-anytime fashion and use data to continually improve the customer experience.

Waitrose is the latest in a line of UK organizations that are leveraging APIs and Apigee to improve the value they deliver to customers, partners and employees. Current EMEA Apigee customers include Morrisons, Marks & Spencer, ITV, BBC Worldwide, Inmarsat, Pearson, among many other leading companies.
