Apigee Delivers New Hybrid Cloud Capability to Boost API Management Performance

Customers Can Now Use Apigee Edge on a Public Cloud, on Premises or in a Hybrid Cloud Environment

SAN JOSE, Calif., July 30, 2015 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Apigee® (NASDAQ:APIC), developer of an intelligent API platform for digital business, today announced that Apigee Edge now supports a hybrid cloud architecture through a new capability called "Apigee Edge Microgateway." With the introduction of Apigee Edge Microgateway, Apigee enables businesses to optimize the performance, availability and capacity of their API systems by deploying Apigee Edge on a self-service public cloud, on-premises infrastructure, or both through a hybrid cloud architecture.

"Apigee Edge has been available both on the cloud and as an on-premises solution, and we are now adding a hybrid cloud deployment option. With Apigee Edge Microgateway Apigee customers can get the simplicity and performance of lightweight, on-premises API management together with the scale and power of a cloud-hosted service," said Anant Jhingran, Apigee chief technology officer. "This can lead to significantly reduced latency for internal enterprise applications with the flexibility to leverage Apigee Edge in the cloud for user-facing mobile or partners apps, for example."

An API is a set of programming instructions that enable software applications to exchange data and "talk" to other applications. To deliver connected digital experiences to their customers, partners and employees, most organizations will rely on a variety of APIs – either built internally or by other organizations. The Apigee Edge API management platform helps enable organizations to securely deliver and manage APIs, with agility and at scale. Apigee Edge is designed to deliver the high throughput and scale required by the most demanding digital businesses; today Apigee supports billions of API calls per week.

Apigee Edge continues to be available both as an on-demand cloud service and an on-premises solution deployed in a customer's private datacenter. In addition, Apigee Edge Microgateway adds a new hybrid cloud deployment option that leverages the availability and performance of the Apigee public cloud together with the performance of local, on-premises API management. Typically installed within a trusted network in close proximity to back-end target services, Apigee Edge Microgateway provides enterprise-grade security and key features such as spike arrest, quota, and analytics, but with a smaller footprint than the full Apigee Edge platform. Apigee Edge Microgateway can help simplify deployment, reduce latency, and improve the performance of API programs powered by Apigee Edge.

Apigee Edge Microgateway is a new component of Apigee Edge that can be easily installed in an enterprise data center or in a cloud environment.  Customers can have it up and running in minutes on platforms such as RHEL, SUSE or CentOS. Apigee Edge Microgateway can share a server with the API implementations it manages or run on a separate server.

Apigee Edge Microgateway is available today for select customers and will be widely available later this year. To request an invitation to participate in the Apigee Edge Microgateway early adopter program, go to https://pages.apigee.com/edge-micro-request.html.
