New Texas Food Handler Certification Requirement in 2016

AUSTIN, Texas, Jan. 25, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- New statewide food handlers' certification requirements were approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services in October 2015. As part of the Texas Food Establishment Rules (TFER), all Texas food handlers must now successfully complete an accredited food handler training courseby September 1, 2016. New hires after September 1, 2016 have 60 days from the date of employment.

People who work with unpackaged food and food equipment and utensils must obtain certification. This includes hostesses, servers, bussers, bartenders, and kitchen staff.

Obtaining the required food handler certificate is the responsibility of employees working in food establishments. Employers would only be responsible for training costs if it would reduce an employee below the minimum wage. This includes employers who take any tip credit.

Previously, food handler certification requirements were left to local health departments. Any certification accredited by the American National Standards Institute (ANSI) and/or the Texas Department of State Health Services is valid in Texas.

360training.com, an ANSI accredited provider, offers an array of online food and alcohol safety training solutions for both businesses and professionals, including the Learn2Serve Food Handler's Course, approved by the Texas Department of State Health Services.
