Erickson Selected by NASA for Mid-Air Retrieval Program

PORTLAND, Ore., March 01, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Erickson Incorporated (NASDAQ:EAC), a leading global provider of aviation services, has been contracted in support of the initial phases of NASA’s 3rd Generation Mid-Air Retrieval Project.

The project is focused on mid-air retrieval of NASA vessels upon re-entry to the atmosphere. Erickson is contracted to study the concept of operations for proposed NASA missions that employ mid-air retrieval using a single S-64F Aircrane helicopter.

“We strive for our aircraft operations and aviation engineering services to be best in class,” said Jeff Roberts, President and CEO at Erickson Incorporated. “Being selected by NASA, once again, to successfully contribute to the future of spaceflight, is an honor.”

Erickson has provided flight services to NASA and other potential spaceflight providers over the past decade. This work will be conducted at Erickson’s southern Oregon facility with presentation of deliverables to NASA at Armstrong Flight Research Center in Edwards, California. This phase of the program is scheduled to be complete within three months of the contract award.

The S-64F Aircrane helicopter has a hoist weight of 25,000 lbs. and is often utilized for heavy lift projects including construction and timber harvesting. The same aircraft, when equipped with a 2,650 gallon water tank, is an effective and accurate tool for firefighting.
