Transforming Health Care: A Compendium of Reports from the NPSF Lucian Leape Institute Released

Health care leaders urged to use the report as a guide for future advances in patient safety

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., May 24, 2016 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The National Patient Safety Foundation's Lucian Leape Institute today released a new resource for health care leaders. Transforming Health Care is a compendium that brings together the executive summaries and recommendations of five reports published by the Institute between 2010 and 2015. The new resource was announced at the 18th Annual NPSF Patient Safety Congress taking place this week in Scottsdale, AZ.

"We hope this publication serves as a call to action for health care leaders, who can use it to inform discussions, implement recommendations, set work priorities, and make decisions that, though sometimes difficult, are necessary to improve patient safety," said Gary Kaplan, MD, FACMPE, chair of the NPSF Lucian Leape Institute and CEO of Virginia Mason Health System.

Since 2010, the Institute's work has focused on examination of five areas that the members identified as being the keys to transforming the safety of our health care system. These areas are: reform of medical education; care integration; restoring joy and meaning in work, including workforce safety; patient and family engagement; and greater transparency at all levels to promote safety.

"Leaders of organizations don't necessarily know where or how to begin in approaching these issues," said Tejal K. Gandhi, MD, MPH, CPPS, president and CEO of NPSF and president of the Institute. "We urge health care leaders to use this resource to assess where their organizations stand in the journey to safer care and to help map out how they can accelerate their progress."
