TÜV Rheinland Announces Comprehensive Smart Home Device Testing and Certification Program

New services speed time to market for smart home manufacturers, ensure interoperability, regulatory, performance, security and consumer privacy are ‘designed in’

FREMONT, Calif., Aug. 07, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- TÜV Rheinland, the global leader in independent inspection for quality and safety, today announced availability of a comprehensive suite of testing and certification services for the smart home device ecosystem.

To support the new service launch, the company will be conducting a weekly Webinar starting on August 9, dedicated to explaining key trends and considerations for smart home device manufacturers. TÜV Rheinland expects to release an educational whitepaper, “Overcoming Adoption Obstacles for Smart Home Market Success,” available shortly.

For smart home device manufacturers and product engineers, market success has proven it will hinge on successful integration between device interoperability and security. The primary value is built upon products’ ability to communicate with an entire ecosystem of other connected devices in the home, as well as the internet, and do so in a way that ensures user privacy.

“The pressure to deploy quickly often results in overlooking details at the design phase that factor into product compliance, and ensure market success,” said Sarb Shelopal, global director of wireless and IoT testing at TÜV Rheinland. “Smart home manufacturers must grapple with meeting stringent buyer demand for ease-of-use, cybersecurity, and privacy at once. As such, it has become paramount to assure products will function up to consumer standard, and not pose a risk. TÜV Rheinland provides end-to-end testing and certification to help manufacturers meet this critical demand.”

TÜV Rheinland’s smart home services include Regulatory testing to ensure devices comply with limitations set by the U.S. Federal Communications Commission and international entities (such as CE, IC, Korea, Japan, China and many more); interoperability testing against voluntary standards such as WiFi, Bluetooth, ZigBee, Thread and others so that devices will interoperate with other products on the standard; and Security Certification services to protect devices against security vulnerabilities.

TÜV Rheinland opened a wireless IoT Excellence Center in 2017, providing manufacturers with a full resource for IoT device testing and certification services.

Finally, starting on Wednesday, August 9, TÜV Rheinland launches a four-part Webinar series devoted to helping stakeholders understand key trends and issues affecting the smart home market. The sessions are:

  • Wednesday, August 9 at 2pm ET: “Ensuring Safe (Green) Materials in Smart Home Devices” will discuss smart home device regulatory requirements and industry trends to ensure safe materials. Register here.
