Dr. Dylan Wiliam Reveals Key Assessment Practices for Improving Student Education

Bloomington, IN, Nov. 01, 2017 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Research indicates that attention to classroom assessment processes can substantially increase the rate of student learning—in some cases effectively doubling its speed. In the second edition of his best-selling Embedded Formative Assessment, published by Solution Tree, author Dylan Wiliam presents new insights, examples and formative assessment techniques that teachers can immediately apply in their classrooms.

“The key features of effective learning environments are that they create student engagement and allow teachers, learners and their peers to ensure that the learning is proceeding in the intended direction,” explained Wiliam. “The only way we can do this is through assessment.”

This second edition of Embedded Formative Assessment has the following additions and revisions:

  • Over 30% new content, research and formative assessment techniques for teachers to apply in their classrooms.
  • Updated and revised data and research that aligns the book’s contents with continuing studies in the field.
  • New insights into the current states of education and employment, and a discussion of how these changes affect student performance and teacher practice.
  • Additional examples and templates to help teachers elicit evidence of learning, provide meaningful feedback and activate students as owners of their own learning.
  • A deeper and more thorough discussion of educational neuroscience, including studies of memory and dual-pathway theory.

Wiliam’s hope is that the book convinces educators about the potential impact of formative assessment and empowers them to begin the challenging but important task of applying research to practice. “If all teachers accept the need to improve practice, not because they are not good enough but because they can be even better—and focus on the things that make the biggest difference to their students—we will be able to prepare our students to thrive in the impossibly complex, unpredictable world of the 21st century,” stated Wiliam.

Myron Dueck, vice principal of Summerland Secondary School in British Columbia, praised the title, stating, “Dylan Wiliam’s latest work seamlessly weaves research with practicality, big ideas with accessible classroom examples, and grassroots movements with global trends. Wiliam is refreshingly honest in his analysis of what most impacts learning, and he leaves the reader more convinced than ever that assessment does indeed form the bridge between teaching and learning.”
