Annual Conference for Healthcare Finance Leaders Unveils New Name and Format

New Approach Is Designed to Maximize Value to Participants


Washington, D.C., Jan. 23, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- After more than 60 years hosting the Annual National Institute (ANI), the Healthcare Financial Management Association (HFMA) is changing the name and completely revamping the format and structure of its annual conference for healthcare finance executives, which is held each June.

The 2018 HFMA Annual Conference, scheduled for June 24-27 in Las Vegas, enables participants to choose one of two learning pathways: cohort, in which participants spend the entire day exploring, discussing, and gaining insight into a single content area; or freestyle, in which participants move as they wish from session to session across content areas or styles throughout the day.

“This conference has always been a unique blend of inspiration, innovation, and real-world skills and ideas that participants can apply in their own organizations,” said HFMA President and CEO Joseph J. Fifer, FHFMA, CPA. “Looking at the conference experience through participants’ eyes, we identified format changes that enable us to deliver on that promise more effectively.” 

The first day of the conference features in-depth workshops, which are included in the registration fee, and interactive roundtable discussions on hot topics and solutions. Throughout the rest of the conference, participants will engage in keynote, roundtable, and case study sessions, choosing from the following eight content areas: Reducing Total Cost of Care; Creating a Consumer-Centric Healthcare Delivery System; Business Intelligence and Analytics; Future of Revenue Cycle; Washington Update; Leadership and Organization Capability; Payment Trends and Models; and Trends and Innovation.

Keynote speakers include:

  • Futurist Nicholas Webb, M.D., speaking on “The Disruptive Future of Healthcare:  The Good News!” Dr. Webb will discuss how new technologies will improve quality of life, health, and connectivity, and how to make innovation real at the organizational level.

  • Healthcare innovation expert Rubin Pillay, M.D., Ph.D., on “HealthCare’s Renaissance: Converging to Heal.” Dr. Pillay will illustrate how, for the first time, policy, provider and health plan strategies and innovations may be aligning with consumerism and a market-based approach to health care. 

  • NASA astronaut Mae Jemison, M.D., on “What If: Healthcare 2020.” Currently leading the 100 Year Starship project for interstellar space travel, Dr. Jemison challenges her audience to recognize that anything is possible, whether transforming the healthcare industry or reaching the stars. 

  • New York Times bestselling author Dan Schawbel, speaking on “The LeaderShift:  How to Discover, Engage, & Develop the Next Generation of Leaders.” This session is based on Schawbel’s upcoming book, “Back to Human: How Great Leaders Encourage Connection in the Age of Isolation.”

A new conference feature, Executive Connection Meetings, matches participants with business partners who have solutions that are most relevant to their needs. Also new this year, the Career Connection Experience offers interview strategy sessions, executive coaching, career builder opportunities, job board assistance, and headshots. The Innovation Hub highlights forward-thinking healthcare start-ups in action, showcasing advanced solutions and technologies.

The HFMA Annual Conference is geared toward healthcare finance executives, business partners, and others who work in hospital, health system, health plan, and physician practice settings.
