Naturopathic Doctors Expand Treatment Options for Depression and Other Health Conditions

Seattle, June 18, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Growing reliance on medications linked to depression coupled with increasing national suicide rates has Americans looking for new options to manage common health conditions, including high blood pressure and chronic pain. Naturopathic medicine expands treatment options for patients, and a growing number of medical doctors are collaborating with naturopathic doctors for this reason and others. This is according to the Institute for Natural Medicine (INM), which today released a new FAQ in partnership with the American Association of Naturopathic Physicians (AANP).

One third of Americans use complementary and integrative healthcare approaches today. Licensed naturopathic doctors (NDs), who complete a four-year, science-based, post-graduate medical education, are at the forefront of complementary and integrative health disciplines. Naturopathic doctors enhance care and expand treatment options for patients because they:

  • Take a whole-body approach to health
  • Prioritize natural therapies
  • Apply rigorous training in clinical nutrition
  • Employ advanced training in behavioral medicine
  • Provide highly individualized care
  • Are fluent in integrative and complementary approaches

“Today, consumers are seeking wellness, prevention, and health creation beyond disease management. These areas are focal points of naturopathic medicine,” said Michelle Simon, PhD, ND and Chair of the INM Board of Directors. “Because of their deep experience in evidence-based alternatives that expand patient choice, naturopathic doctors are increasingly recognized as a vital part of the healthcare team.”
