TÜV Rheinland Simplifies Photovoltaics (PV) Certification for the North American Market

TÜV Rheinland saves cost on exports to North America by combining UL and IEC PV testing

COLOGNE, Germany and LITTLETON, Mass., June 19, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- TÜV Rheinland, a testing and certification leader at the forefront of interoperability, performance and safety in the globally connected world, today simplified testing for photovoltaic (PV) standards in North America, offering testing for both the UL 61730 and IEC 61730 standards, reducing costs for manufacturers.

Market Access to North America for photovoltaic modules will follow the UL 61730 standard, which was published in December 2017. UL 61730 will fully replace the former ANSI/UL 1703 after a transitional period by the end of 2019. By combining certification capabilities for the UL 61730 and IEC 61730 and PV standards, TÜV Rheinland conveniently provides all necessary testing capabilities to reduce manufacturers’ costs during this transition period.

“Manufacturers no longer need to provide separate sets of test samples for the two different PV standards. By aligning the requirements of IEC 61730 and UL 61730, TÜV Rheinland can better facilitate PV certification for the North American market," explains Guido Volberg, Head of Technical Competence Center for PV Modules, TÜV Rheinland. "Simply by applying a few additional or modified tests, TÜV Rheinland can test PV modules in accordance with the North American standard for UL 61730 and IEC 61730, making it easier, less expensive and faster for our customers,” emphasizes Volberg.

TÜV Rheinland offers these PV tests globally. Prior to the end of the transition period at the end of 2019, companies should prepare for market access to North America in this simplified way.
