2018 International Conference on Human Milk Science and Innovation Will Explore New Applications of Human Milk and Its Long-Term Clinical Benefits in Neonatal Care

PASADENA, Calif., Sept. 04, 2018 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- Leading medical researchers and clinicians from around the globe will gather in Pasadena, California, on September 5-7, 2018, to attend the sixth annual International Conference on Human Milk Science and Innovation (ICHMSI) and discuss the latest scientific research on human milk and its expanding clinical applications.

The ICHMSI is the premier forum for thought leaders and medical experts in human milk science and research. This year’s conference will include opening and closing remarks by co-chairs Lars Bode, Ph.D., University of California San Diego, and William D. Rhine, M.D., Stanford University School of Medicine. The keynote address will be given by Josef Neu, M.D., University of Florida College of Medicine.

“Scientific advancements presented at the International Conference on Human Milk Science and Innovation underscore the benefits and potential of human milk in neonatal care and beyond,” said Dr. Bode, co-chair. “New research is exploring its clinical benefits and long-term impact on postnatal development and, we hope, will reveal new applications for the use of human milk nutrition.”

The ICHMSI program will include presentations from experts in their respective fields:

  • Josef Neu, M.D., University of Florida College of Medicine: “Babies’ Own Mothers’ Milk: How Does It Differ from Donor Milk?”
  • Kjersti Aagaard, M.D., Ph.D., FACOG, Baylor College of Medicine and Texas Children’s Hospital: “Feeding Babies and Bugs”
  • Atul Singhal, M.D., MRCP, University College London Institute of Child Health and Great Ormond Street Hospital: “The Impact of Human Milk Feeding on Long-term Risk of Obesity and Cardiovascular Disease”
  • Bernardo L. Horta, Ph.D., Federal University of Pelotas: “Breastfeeding: Investing in the Future”
  • Camilia Martin, M.D., M.S., Harvard Medical School: “Breast Milk Lipidomics: Insights to Infant Health Requirements and Targeted Strategies for the Vulnerable”
  • Christoph Fusch, M.D., Ph.D., FRCPC, Paracelsus Medical University, Nuremberg General Hospital: “Avoiding Postnatal Growth Retardation by Individualized Fortification of Breast Milk – Implications for Somatic and Neurodevelopmental Outcomes”
  • Christopher Smith, R.D., Royal Alexandra Children’s Hospital: “Supporting Optimal Growth in Infants with Chronic Conditions – How Are We Doing and What Can We Do?”
  • Paula Meier, Ph.D., R.N., Rush University Medical Center: “Prioritizing High-dose, Long-exposure to Mothers’ Own Milk During the NICU Hospitalization”
  • Meghan Azad, Ph.D., Children’s Hospital Research Institute of Manitoba: “Infant Feeding and the Developmental Origins of Chronic Disease in the CHILD Cohort: Role of Human Milk Bioactives and Gut Microbiota”
  • Paolo Manzoni, M.D., Ph.D., Sant’Anna Hospital: “Clinical Studies of Lactoferrin in Neonates and Infants: An Update”

The conference will also include a presentation by Steven D. Townsend, Ph.D., the second recipient of the Ruth A. Lawrence Investigator Award for Research in Human Milk Science. The annual award was created in 2017 to recognize a medical fellow or postdoctoral scholar for his or her research in the science of human milk.
