Staten Island, NY, Jan. 07, 2019 (GLOBE NEWSWIRE) -- The Stephen Siller Tunnel to Towers Foundation, named after a fallen 9/11 firefighter, is proud to announce it has raised enough money to pay off the mortgage on the home of slain Newman California Police Cpl. Ronil Singh.
Due to an outpouring of support from donors around the globe, the Foundation will also give the family an additional $50,000 donation to help with Cpl. Singh's son's future education costs.
Cpl. Singh was shot and killed in the early hours of December 26, during a traffic stop. He was killed just hours after celebrating Christmas with his wife Anamika and his 5-month-old son.
Cpl. Singh emigrated from Fiji to the United States in 2003 to pursue his dreams of becoming a police officer. He made his dream come true in 2011 when he joined the Newman Police Department.
Tunnel to Towers Chairman and CEO Frank Siller said Cpl. Singh “Came here to live the American dream,” and called on the country to “Show them the greatness of America and take care of his family."
After announcing the fundraising effort to help the Singh family, donations came in from all 50 states, Great Britain, Canada, Armenia, Israel, Hong Kong, New Zealand and the Aland Islands.
Frank Siller traveled to Newman and met with Singh's widow Anamika and his brother Reggie Singh.
“She expressed such tremendous relief that she will never have to worry about this mortgage again and that there is other money to help her son,” Siller said. "She wanted to express her thanks to everyone who helped support her family in the wake of this tragedy,” he added.
The Tunnel to Towers Fallen First Responder Home Program pays off the mortgages for the families left behind when a firefighter or police officer is killed under extraordinary circumstances in the line of duty. Since 2015 the Foundation has ensured more than 30 first responder families with young children all over the country have the security and stability of a mortgage-free home.
