Mobility technology leader Bombardier Transportation was honoured at the third annual Women in Transport Awards held on October 15, 2019 in Durban, South Africa. It is proud of Nogolide Ntshebe, Transformation and Reporting Specialist for Bombardier Transportation in South Africa, who won this year’s award for Rising Star in the South Africa Transport industry, and of being recognized as a key player in South Africa’s rail transportation sector.

“I am delighted to have won this award which recognizes our commitment to the South African government’s local content policies and to manufacturing rail products for South Africa in South Africa. Bombardier has demonstrated a high degree of collaboration between the rail industry, local operators and academic institutions,” said Nogolide Ntshebe. “We are proud that our innovative rail technologies, which are manufactured locally, are improving the lives of millions of South Africans daily.”

This award is a testament to locally manufacturing rail products and maintaining fleets, which improves and transforms mobility in major South African cities. These prestigious annual awards are hosted by the African Ports and Rail Evolution and bring together Africa’s most renowned transport industry professionals. In addition, it provides a platform to recognize and reward outstanding achievements, as well as celebrate women’s success in transforming the transport industry. The winners were selected by a panel consisting of local and international experts from various sectors.

Bombardier fosters diversity and equal opportunities for all employees regarding interests and professional development and is committed to providing a barrier and bias-free work environment. Although it realizes more effort and initiatives are required, Bombardier firmly believes that gender diversity and women in leadership are essential to our long-term success and is placing a larger focus on women’s professional development, training, education and mentoring. For example, steps have been taken to make our operations in South Africa more appealing to female employees and encourage more heterogeneous teams. These include launching a Women Empowerment Committee, Women in Engineering Committee and Prevention of Sexual Harassment Committee across our sites to increase diversity and greater women involvement.

The company is also committed to supporting the professional development and greater inclusion of women employees in managerial roles - who support the organization’s profitable growth and sustainability, enabling us to move millions of people daily worldwide.

Bombardier has around 200 direct employees in South Africa with two rail manufacturing sites, support offices for business and commercial aircraft, a rail maintenance facility and warranty support offices across South Africa.
