KEMIRA SELLS KEMIRA SAFETY OY TO THE US-BASED SCOTT TECHNOLOGIES, INC.



Kemira Oyj and Scott Technologies, Inc. have today signed a conditional agreement on the sale of Kemira Safety Oy to Scott at the price of USD 17.15 million (EUR 17.7 million). The corresponding book value of Kemira Safety Oy in the Kemira Group is EUR 6.5 million.

Kemira Safety is a profitable high-tech safety equipment company with good growth prospects for its respiratory protective devices. By buying Kemira Safety, Scott Technologies further strengthens its position in the European safety equipment markets and provides Kemira Safety with better growth possibilities both in Europe and North America especially in the area of powered respiratory devices. Plans call for Scott to maintain the current operations in Vaasa with existing personnel. The sale does not affect the status of the personnel of the Kemira Safety Oy.

Kemira Safety is already now one of the leading manufacturers of respiratory protective devices in Europe. Its manufacturing site is located in Vaasa, Finland and it has its own marketing company Kemira Safety Ltd in the UK. The sales of Kemira Safety were EUR 14.2 million (FIM 85 million) in 1999 and it employes nearly 100 people.

Scott Technologies, Inc. is a US-based publicly held company (The Nasdaq Stock Market: SCTT) located in Cleveland, Ohio. Scott Technologies, Inc. is a leading designer and manufacturer of sophisticated, high-performance respiratory protection systems, gas detection instruments and other life saving products for firefighting, industrial markets, aviation and government. The sales of Scott were USD 200 million in 1999 and it employes about 1,000 people.

The agreement is subject to further due diligence and the approval of the Ministry of Defence in Finland, which is expected to be received within one month´s time.
