Nokia demonstrates IPv6 live in the UK

Nokia today performed a live IPv6 demonstration during the World Telecommunications Congress and IPv6 Forum meeting in Birmingham, UK.

The live demonstration shows a full end-to-end IPv6 system that supports both dynamic quality of service and multicasting at the network level. IPv6's multicasting capabilities are demonstrated with a video conference application. The differentiated services concept and its efficiency are demonstrated with high bandwidth video streams with extensive background traffic. The end user or the operator can dynamically configure the service levels.

Compared to existing Internet services, such as browsing and e-mail, mobile Internet services need to bring more interactivity and personalisation to the end user. By implementing IPv6 in their mobile Internet networks can better respond to market demand. In addition to bringing more addresses to the Internet, one of the key elements IPv6 adds to the network is quality of service.

"As the leader in Mobile Internet we feel that it is our responsibility to push forward the initiatives and the required standardisation to make Mobile Information Society happen," said Asko Räsänen, head of the Nokia IPv6 System and Marketing Program, "This demonstration is a part of that effort, illustrating the benefits to the end-user and shows how IPv6 technology truly opens up the possibilities of new 3G services."

The current IPv4 technology, from which IPv6 has evolved, will not be able to support the billions of devices predicted to require IP addresses in the future, as it is already becoming exhausted and depends on address sharing.

The IPv6 protocol incorporates features like network security, mobility, and quality of service and is
specified by the IETF's (Internet Engineering Task Force) IPng (IP next generation) working group, which is co-chaired by Nokia. The demonstration coincided with the meeting of the global IPv6 Forum, a consortium of Internet industry players founded to promote IPv6 and ensure interoperability of IPv6 devices between operators and services, of which Nokia is an active member. Nokia views IPv6 as a basis for scalable high-quality IP networking and hence is supporting the standard.

Nokia is paving the way to the Mobile Information Society with its innovative products and solutions. The company is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, broadband and IP networks, related services as well as multimedia terminals. In 1999, Nokia's net sales totaled EUR 19.8 billion (USD 19.9 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the New York (NOK), Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges and employs more than 56 000 people.
