Nokia completes tests in revolutionary cost saving radio technology for 3G

Nokia has successfully completed field testing of the unique Nokia Smart Radio Concept (SRC) designed to help mobile operators reduce capital investments during initial rollout of 3G networks. The tests also included the completion of WDCMA indoor field tests; verifying the performance of a number of solutions to provide 3G indoor coverage.

The high bit rates needed to provide seamless 3rd generation services demand good coverage and sufficient capacity throughout the WCDMA network service area. With the Nokia SRC, launched earlier this year, operators can improve capacity by up to 75% with roughly 30 % fewer sites than would be otherwise required with traditional network rollout methods.

The dedicated indoor coverage that were tested included passive distributed antenna systems and fiber optical distributed systems. The co-siting of WCDMA and GSM in the same indoor antenna system was also successfully tested.

"These solutions will radically reduce the cost of providing coverage as well as speeding up WCDMA network deployment," said Ukkko Lappalainen, General Manager, WCDMA 3rd Generation Business, Nokia Networks. "With the Nokia WCDMA Base Station Subsystem operators can build a profitable 3rd Generation business from today. This highly integrated solution is designed for maximum efficiency with minimum effort to help our new and existing customers rapidly implement mobile multimedia services."

Nokia provides 3G systems for both WCDMA and EDGE technologies. These include Base Station Subsystems, Packet and Circuit Switching Systems, end-user service delivery platforms, application functionalities, systems integration services, Service and Network Management Solutions including Service Provisioning and Billing, and 3G Terminals. In addition to infrastructure and software, Nokia Professional Services provides comprehensive service solutions for planning, deploying, managing and enhancing 3G systems.

Nokia is paving the way to the mobile information society with its innovative products and solutions. Nokia is the leading mobile phone supplier and a leading supplier of mobile, broadband and IP networks, related services as well as multimedia terminals. In 1999, net sales totaled EUR 19.8 billion (USD 19.9 billion). Headquartered in Finland, Nokia is listed on the New York (NOK), Helsinki, Stockholm, London, Frankfurt and Paris stock exchanges and employs more than 60,000 people.
