U.S. Air Force Awards Northrop Grumman Contract for Joint Stars Fleet Support

MELBOURNE, Fla., Sept. 20, 2000 (PRIMEZONE) -- The U.S. Air Force has awarded Northrop Grumman Corporation (NYSE:NOC) a contract for the Total System Support Responsibility (TSSR) for the E-8C Joint Surveillance Target Attack Radar System (Joint STARS) fleet. The TSSR has a six-year initial period of performance valued at more than $500 million with options that could extend Northrop Grumman's participation on this program for more than two decades.

Through this future support contract, the Air Force expects to reduce the cost of supporting the E-8C fleet by having the prime contractor, Northrop Grumman's Integrated Systems Sector (ISS), partner with the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center.

"This is a cooperative business initiative by the Warner Robins Air Logistics Center and Northrop Grumman and will capitalize on the company's systems integration capabilities, not just for design and production, but for the complete life cycle," said Alan Doshier, ISS sector vice president for the company's Airborne Ground Surveillance and Battle Management Systems business area. "Our responsibility is to provide improved system performance and training for the warfighter while reducing support costs."

Core work for the Air Logistics Center will include normal depot maintenance, repair, overhaul and other non-core work, including support equipment upgrades. The Air Logistics Center and Northrop Grumman ISS will utilize each other's best practices to provide Joint STARS support that is economical and fully meets the needs of warfighters. Northrop Grumman will provide integrated management of all facets of depot maintenance for Joint STARS, including technology refreshment. The contract also provides for subcontract competition and small business participation.

Northrop Grumman's ISS, headquartered in Dallas, Tex., is a premier aerospace systems integration enterprise. ISS has the capabilities to design, develop, integrate, produce and support complete systems, as well as airframe subsystems, for airborne surveillance and battle management aircraft, early warning aircraft, airborne electronic warfare aircraft and air combat aircraft.
