The first nationwide TETRA network supplied by Nokia now operational

Finland's Ministry of Interior is one of the first organizations in the world to open it's VIRVE network based on the digital TETRA standard (Terrestrial Trunked Radio System). The new network, now operational, will provide an efficient and extensive radio system for the Finnish authorities. The network will enhance the authorities' readiness to perform duties in all situations. Nokia's TETRA network will gradually replace the present radio networks. The installation of TETRA network began in 1998.

"The build up of the network has gone as planned and most of the base stations have been installed in the areas of Western and Southern Finland including the Helsinki metropolitan area. Users of the VIRVE network are from all authorized user organizations. At the moment the biggest user group is rescue services," says Esko Rajahalme, Project Manager, VIRVE, Ministry of the Interior, Finland.

"TETRA networks are especially designed for authority use both in every day activities and unusual conditions. During 2000 Nokia introduced mobile IP packet data and WAP functionalities for TETRA networks, which offers new possibilities to use different kinds of data applications. Examples of existing applications are on-line access to databases, location, routing, measuring and emergency services" says Kari Suneli, Senior Vice President, Professional Mobile Radio, Nokia Networks.

Nokia's TETRA network for digital professional radio network offers special features for authority use; efficient group calls, ability to prioritize calls and emergency calls. Nokia is one of the world's leading suppliers of TETRA networks and terminals.
