KEMIRA TO INVEST IN SAFETY AND EFFICIENCY AT UUSIKAUPUNKI PLANT


Kemira has approved an investment programme to improve safety, efficiency and competitiveness at the Uusikaupunki site. The investment totals EUR 10 million and will employ approx. 50 man years.

The biggest investment is for the renewal of the automation system of the nitric acid plant where process safety and optimization will be improved and process control centralized. The project has been started and will be completed by the end of year 2002.

Coolers at fertilizer plant 2 will be renewed in order to improve product cooling. The investment will improve fertiliser quality, save energy and cooling water and allows for higher production capacity during the warm summer months. The project will be part of the year 2002 maintenance break.

Furthermore the investment programme will include recycling projects with the aim to improve the usage level of nutrients. Also two harbour portal cranes will be renewed, and handling and loading of process chemicals will be improved. Safety will be furthermore improved by renewing loading sites and using road transportation.
