VAISALA EQUIPS TURKISH AIRPORTS WITH METEOROLOGICAL SYSTEMS

The Vaisala Group has signed a contract with the General
Directorate of State Meteorological Services of Turkey to
supply automatic airport weather observation systems to ten
major Turkish airports. Under the contract, Vaisala will
deliver Automated Weather Observing Systems (AWOS) to ten
airports, including the Ataturk International Airport in
Istanbul and Ankara Esenboga Airport. Valued at EUR 2.9
million, the deliveries under the contract will be carried out
in 2001 and 2002.

In addition to the AWOS Systems the contract covers delivery
of an associated software for remote monitoring, control and
maintenance of the entire network at a central site.

"This is a significant contract on the aviation weather system
market, which annually totals approximately some 50 million
EUR", states Pekka Ketonen, CEO and President of Vaisala.
"This order also introduces a new element: all the major
airports of the country will be equipped at the same time and
will form an integrated entity which allows centralized
administration. This way of action is expected to increase in
the future", says Ketonen.

The AWOS System (MIDAS IV) collects, validates, processes,
stores and visually presents data generated by a variety of
meteorological sensors. The standard system comprises a
central computer with the necessary communication devices, the
operator's equipment and meteorological sensors. The system
can be configured to suit the requirements of the aviation
site in question: ICAO categories up to CAT IIIB are covered.
