Nokia introduces a revolutionary Linear Transceiver (LTX) family for Open IP Base Station Architecture

Nokia launched today at the 3GSM World Congress in Cannes, France, the industry's first high-power multi-carrier linear transceiver (LTX) family of base station modules, as part of the Open IP Base Station Architecture initiative also announced in Cannes. The first Nokia Linear Transceiver products to be introduced will be the Nokia LTX W-series for WCDMA base stations.

The Nokia LTX product family includes radio-access technology modules that incorporate a unique linear multi-carrier transceiver architecture. The Nokia LTX unit replaces the functionality of multiple receivers, transmitters and linear power amplifiers (LPA) in mobile-network base stations, allowing mobile communication networking manufacturers to cost-efficiently produce base stations, and allowing operators to benefit from accelerated time-to-market and reduced cost.

Nokia Linear Transceiver products are planned to be compliant with the upcoming Open IP Base Station Architecture. The Open IP Base Station Architecture initiative aims to define a modular open architecture for future base stations.

"With the launch of the Nokia Linear Transceiver product family, we are showing our support for the initiative to define an open architecture for base stations. Nokia LTX units can be incorporated into any manufacturers' base stations, allowing savings in R&D resources and shortening the system's time-to-market," said Jukka Klemettilä, General Manager, Base Station Modules, Nokia Networks.

Nokia selected the DSP-based adaptive digital linearization method to meet the needs of high-quality, linear, wideband amplifiers while achieving the highest transmitter power efficiency in the industry (over 20%). In addition, a high level of integration and the unique architecture of Nokia LTX products substantially reduce cost and size of the radio-frequency portion of the base station, which will be typically the dominant element in future base stations.

The Nokia LTX provides superior capacity and coverage improvements for increasing wireless traffic requirements. The W-series of Nokia LTXs introduced at the 3GSM World Congress employs a variety of intelligent features, such as advanced diversity modes and smart antennas, to enable emerging technologies.

"Nokia Linear Transceiver products will bring significant advantages over existing solutions in reaching highly efficient RF power solutions for future wireless base stations," continued Jukka Klemettilä.
