Nokia connects more than people with the introduction of the Nokia 31 Terminal

ORLANDO, FLA - At CTIA Wireless 2002, Nokia furthered its vision of the mobile world by introducing its M2M (machine-to-machine) solution that combines telecommunications and information technology to automate processes, integrates assets in a company's IT system, and create value-added services without the need for a permanent wired connection. Introduced today, the Nokia M2M Platform family consists of the Nokia M2M Gateway software, the Nokia 31 GSM Connectivity Terminal and the Nokia M2M Application Development Kit (ADK). With this product portfolio, Nokia is offering a complete, scalable and reliable end-to-end wireless solution to the M2M markets, where minimizing the cost of application development, operation and maintenance is essential.

"The Nokia M2M solution represents a natural extension of Nokia's experience and success in building mobile technology solutions" said Randy Roberts, director of business development at Nokia. "The Nokia M2M Gateway and the Nokia 31 GSM Connectivity Terminal creates wireless solutions and additional growth opportunities for businesses, carriers and system integrators alike."

According to McKinsey and Company the M2M market is estimated to grow to $100 billion by 2010 for US, Japan and Western Europe together and the number of M2M connections is estimated to exceed 100 million by 2005.

The Nokia M2M platform can easily be implemented in a wide range of application and solution environments such as automatic meter reading, security, elevator control, fleet management, vending and telemedicine by using the existing commercial mobile communications network. It creates new business opportunities to wireless network operators as they can build business in the corporate sector and broaden their business scope. Service providers can expand their product portfolio or enter new businesses in the application service arena. Developers can create applications fast and easily on the open Nokia M2M Platform.

The Nokia M2M platform is also an ideal corporate solution for designing innovative corporate applications that use wireless networks to increase efficiency, decrease operating costs and enhance a competitive edge. Two industries for which the complete Nokia M2M solution could offer new benefits are vending and home security.

A typical vending operator will have an installed base of vending machines, as well as a fleet of delivery trucks and drivers. Typically, each machine is visited on a regular basis, regardless of the need for resupply or service. With the Nokia M2M solution, the vending machine can automatically report back to the central office, give inventory status, relay operation problems, and even report trend analysis of the most popular products. This information can be wirelessly relayed to the service fleet, resulting in both a reduction of unnecessary visits and fewer out-of-stock situations. Additionally, home security systems using a wireless connection between the home and the security service provider should be better connected by using the Nokia M2M solution, rather than relying on an external link to the wired telephone network. With this system, a homeowner potentially could even unlock the front door by using a mobile phone with a special security code.

In the future, it will become increasingly important that people utilize their mobile devices in new ways. M2M, machine-to-machine communication is an important part of this evolution, as remote devices become important content creators for next generation professional and consumer applications. Nokia is in an excellent position to offer this new communications platform in the emerging market to further strengthen its position as market leader in wireless communications as it is known worldwide for intelligent and innovative design in wireless solutions, including voice and data transmission, new mobile technologies and complete wireless IP networks. M2M represents a natural extension of Nokia's know-how, bringing new opportunities in automation, efficiency and customer service.
