TietoEnator Participates in the SyncML Initiative

ESPOO, Finland, April 9, 2002 (PRIMEZONE) -- TietoEnator has renewed its participation in the SyncML Initiative in order to promote the use of this technology in wireless solutions. This participation - the Initiative Supporter agreement - enables TietoEnator to contribute to the development of the SyncML technology and to quickly utilise the newest improvements.

SyncML is an open XML-based standard for data synchronisation, especially between networked devices and mobile devices. Its aim is to ensure interoperability.

The use of the SyncML standard has benefits for everyone, from consumers to terminal manufacturers, service providers and operators. The standard provides the user of a particular device with, for example, an up-to-date calendar, a contact information register, or e-mail facilities - regardless of the device that is being used. With the help of this standard, the operator or service provider can, in turn, provide the customer with a common interface that is independent of the type of wireless device being used.

SyncML has been widely accepted by the telecommunications industry. It is promoted by some of the leading companies in the business, such as Nokia, Ericsson, Motorola, IBM, Lotus, Matsushita, Openwave, and Symbian (see www.syncml.org for details).

TietoEnator has a SyncML competence centre in Tampere. Ten experts who specialise in solutions that employ this technology work in the centre. In the future, this expertise will be extremely important, as systems that use telephones as terminal devices are implemented on a large scale.

"We are expecting significant growth in this area, and we are constantly developing our own implementation expertise," said Harri Luuppala, director at TietoEnator.

With almost 12,000 employees and annual net sales of EUR 1.1 billion, TietoEnator is a leading supplier of high value-added IT services in Europe.
