Nokia chosen to secure one of the world's largest private networks

Maersk Data, one of the world's largest providers of central IT operations, has chosen Nokia to ensure business continuity among its global customers. Maersk Data, headquartered in Denmark, supports customers across the world with its independent global network. The company owns or partly owns more than 30 companies across six different countries, including Sweden, UK, USA, India and Japan and is split into 14 business units.

Some of these companies are dedicated to Internet-related fields such as the development and operation of Internet portals, and Internet-based marketing. Others are involved in more traditional areas such as facility management, development and networking.

The company began its work with Nokia by first testing a number of Nokia's mid-range IP300 Series of IP network security appliances. After successful performance testing of these systems, it quickly added to its hardware from Nokia, which now includes high performance fault tolerant IP650 network security appliances for heavier data throughput, and entry-level IP100 Series network security appliances for lower-level throughput. Nokia IP network security appliances combine the best-of-breed VPN-1®/FireWall-1® software solutions from Check Point Software Technologies (NASDAQ: CHKP).

The support of corporate outsourcing is a key business area, and project management - including the implementation of corporate ERP systems - is another key market for the group.

To achieve this full business support, Maersk has a combined CPU unit capacity of more than 19,000 MIPS through its powerful mainframe system, and it has the biggest privately controlled communications network in the world. Maersk's extensive network offers customers anything from a 255Mbps communications backbone to a single user 64kbps line.

Kenneth Saxskiold-Nørup, department manager for security & systems management at Maersk Data, says, "We have to protect our network for more than 500 locations across the world, so we have a fairly large network, and one of the largest privately-owned networks in the world," he adds that, "the Nokia appliances are easy to install and are very scalable, and we are still deploying them around our network."

Ernie Jones, Nokia Internet Communications vice president of sales, Europe, Middle-East & Africa, says,"The fact that a company of Maersk Data's size has chosen Nokia to secure its network, demonstrates the power and scalability of the solutions we have to offer and the power of 2 partnership between Nokia and Check Point. We are proud to provide the customer satisfaction that underlines our business strategy."

Nokia is committed to delivering the highest of standards in security, reliability, performance and confidence for its customers' needs. The award-winning Nokia IP network security appliances are designed to serve as critical network components. These appliance-based security solutions have become the "model of choice" for security implementations, combining market-leading security software and word-class IP routing designed to meet the most demanding Internet security challenges all backed by Nokia's unique 24-hour "First Call-Final resolution" global services and support.
