Nokia's MMS solution for TIM commercial multimedia messaging service in Italy

For the commercial launch of TIM's MMS service, the Nokia MMS solution will be integrated into TIM's multivendor network environment in Italy. The multimedia messaging service will allow mobile terminals to send and receive messages combining text, images, graphics and sound in a single rich message.

Under the agreement Nokia has provided the Nokia Multimedia Messaging Center (MMSC), the Nokia Terminal Gateway for non-MMS legacy phones, and system and service integration for the commercial launch of MMS service.

Nokia's MMS solution, thanks to the Nokia Terminal Gateway, will allow the users of MMS phones to send multimedia messages not only to other MMS-capable phones, but also to legacy GSM terminals. Users of legacy terminals receive an SMS notification and can connect to a TIM web site to view their MMS message. MMS- capable phones can also send multimedia messages directly to any e-mail address.

In addition to person-to-person MMS messaging, the Nokia's Terminal Gateway allows a rich variety of person-to-application and application-to-person services, thus offering a virtually unlimited opportunity of launching attractive and revenue-generating multimedia services.

Under the commercial agreement signed earlier this year, Nokia has provided a complete MMS solution as well as integration with TIM's service environment, including the existing WAP gateway. In addition, Nokia is providing full support to multimedia application developers through both Forum Nokia and Nokia's South Europe Mobile Software Integration Center in Catania. Nokia will also provide implementation and integration, and the Nokia KeyCareTM Package, which maintains the competitiveness of the MMS solution.

Nokia has among the industry's longest and most extensive experience in MMS, having piloted commercial systems since the third quarter 2001. Nokia has delivered its MMS solution since December 2001. Nokia's other MMS milestones include the world's first-ever MMS roaming and interconnection, demonstrated in February 2002.
