Nokia delivers first TETRA system with IP backbone to BVG in Germany

Nokia will deliver a digital TETRA professional mobile radio system to Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG). For the first time, the center of the system will be the new DXTip switch, which enables the IP based connection of different Nokia TETRA components using an IP-based backbone.

The contract between Nokia and T-Systems International GmbH, the general contractor, has been signed already.  Deliveries will start in September 2002. The network will be used, initially, by the Berlin subway.

“The digital professional mobile radio system TETRA is the most cost-efficient alternative to meet the functional requirements in the subway area with innovative digital mobile communications,“ comments Holger Seedorf, vice director information and communication at BVG.

"We are delighted to be delivering the Nokia TETRA system to BVG," says Friedbert Leschny, Senior Account Manager for TETRA, Nokia Networks, Germany. "This further strenghtens Nokia's position as a world leader in TETRA networks."

In the implementation of the Berlin TETRA network Nokia is cooperating with T-Systems, who will deliver an end-to-end solution to BVG, comprising the Nokia TETRA network, terminals and applications.

T-System’s order to Nokia comprises the delivery, installation and commissioning of a TETRA DXTip switch, of the TETRA base stations necessary to provide the coverage in the Berlin subway and of the dispatcher workstations. Using the TETRA IP backbone various components, such as application servers, authentication servers and configuration servers, can be connected to the DXTip switch. Nokia is using standardized components, which have been implemented many times in GPRS projects and, thus, are field proven.

Nokia is a world-leading supplier of TETRA networks and terminals, offering the most modern countrywide digital radio communication solutions for public safety organizations and other professional users. Special features include: top-class communication security, fast group calls, sophisticated emergency call functionality, prioritized calls, advanced messaging and data communication services, including packet data.

Nokia has a proven track record in delivering multiswitch TETRA networks capable of providing all TETRA services uniformly countrywide. The open interfaces of Nokia TETRA solutions enable seamless integration to command and control systems.
