CAPE CORAL, Fla., February 5, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- The world can be a place full of contradictions. The White Rose of Cuba (now available through 1stBooks Library) illustrates the truth of that. Author Jack Denson writes a compelling tale of love and betrayal, passion and discord and gallantry and enmity in this new novel. The personal lives of three characters intertwine and offer a rich combination of fascinating adventure and romance, unfurling over a period of nearly four years.
In The White Rose of Cuba, Jack Denson attempts to bring into focus the Spanish-American War by providing a love story set in its midst. Known as the War of Independence to Cubans, the war puts Cuba at the center of a virtual tug-of-war between Spain and America. Providing resistance to these colonizing powers is the Cuban insurrectionist movement. Two brothers raised on a wild horse ranch in southern Utah find themselves caught in this maelstrom in the year 1898. To complicate matters, the oldest becomes inextricably attracted to a female Spanish spy agent. Meanwhile, in Spain's Canary Islands, a youthful hero enlists in the Spanish navy. This narrative approach allows the reader to witness both the land and sea battles from the perspective of both the Spanish and American combatants, as well as the Cuban rebel viewpoint.
A well-researched thriller, The White Rose of Cuba adheres closely to the true historical events, while presenting an intimate view of Cuban culture and life among the rebels. While the characters are composites of all that is true and daring, the events ring true and the supporting characters are real. Recognizing the sacrifices each side made in trying to win the war, Denson supplies the reader with characters from each camp that are all too authentic. Simple folks, who are not afraid to risk and take a chance on love, comprise the nucleus of this enchanting, full-length novel.
Jack Denson served in World War II as a flight officer in the Army Air Corps. He is one person who knows the Cuban scene very well, having visited Cuba a number of times and enjoying a lifetime of contact with the Cuban people and their culture. He hopes that The White Rose of Cuba will be deemed fair to the sensibilities of those who participated in the war. Denson currently lives in Cape Coral, Fla.
