Why Do Soldiers Go To War? New novel explores friendship and duty

MILWAUKEE, Feb. 5, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Soldiers go to war. Some soldiers go for duty, and others go because they are selfless. Juan Galindo tells the story of Carlos and Robert in The Winter Soldiers (now available through 1stBooks Library). Galindo reveals the inner workings of the human heart as Carlos Cordoba and Robert Lauterback, two men from wealthy families, decide to become soldiers after graduating from Prince Royal College in the 1950s.

The Winter Soldiers is the story of Carlos and Robert, college friends who enlist as soldiers for different reasons. Carlos feels a sense of duty to his country and a desire to go into battle. Robert enters the army for Carlos. They train and serve together, until Robert goes to Korea with his infantry division, while Carlos remains at Fort Leonard Wood to train enlisted soldiers. Galindo's plot to focuses on each character's drama and both stories are poignant and unsettling.

Galindo's experience as a soldier provides him with the details that immerse the reader in the reality of being a soldier. "The soldier, who was assured assignment at Leonard Wood could not drive any stakes into the ground, could not identify with the hills unless it was a simulated combat mission. His stories and poems were known only to himself. He understood both quality and quantity. For the soldier, time rolled on in the vastness of the fields."

The Winter Soldiers takes us with the soldier's perspective through the full panoply of military experiences at all stages of the troop's career: enlistment, basic training, garrison duty, combat duty and release from service. Galindo creates a tale, where the reader empathizes with the boredom, terror and rewards of a soldier's life.

Juan L. Galindo served two years as an infantryman in the U.S. Army, and graduated from the University of Wisconsin at Milwaukee with a degree in history and government. He lives in Milwaukee, Wis.
