Nokia Launches Series 60 Product Creation Community

3GSM World Congress, Cannes, France - Nokia introduced today a product creation community formed around the Series 60 Platform. Members of the community are companies who will be able to provide handset manufacturers with optimized Series 60 skills and expertise in successful and timely product creation of advanced smart phones.

The Series 60 product creation community will benefit the Series 60 handset manufacturers with reduced time-to-market and development costs while bringing rich, interoperable features and functionalities to the software platform. The community currently consists of three types of members:

- Series 60 Competence Centers are equipped with proficient and knowledgable resources and  understand requirements for end-to-end software and hardware integration. If needed by the Series 60 licensee, a competence center will be able to manage an entire Series 60 smart phone integration project. Nokia has established the Series 60 competence center through agreements with Digia, EMCC Software and Teleca.

- Series 60 Contractors are skilled software development companies who can offer licensees specified technologies and expertise for the Series 60 Platform. Contractors will be able to fine tune a product creation project with a valuable mix of features and applications or provide specific, targeted telecommunications engineering project work. Contractors in the Series 60 Production Creation Community are Atelier, Kanrikogaku Kenkyusho (K3), EmuZed and Elcoteq.

- Series 60 Semiconductor Alliances: As the mobile industry migrates from voice-only to robust smart phone platforms, such as Series 60, advanced communication requirements, such as multimedia messaging, and advanced application functionality creates unique design challenges and opportunities. Increasingly, handset manufacturers are turning to their semiconductor providers for innovative solutions that help reduce system cost while enabling them to bring products to market quickly. Nokia has expanded its collaboration with Texas Instruments Incorporated to provide well-integrated functionality between the Series 60 Platform and TI's portfolio of OMAP platforms.

"The companies which form the Series 60 Product Creation Community are proven leaders in the field of smart phone development and we, the Series 60 licensees and Nokia, look forward to our cooperation with the outcome of effective and timely introduction of new smart phones to meet the rapidly growing market demand," said Niklas Savander, Senior Vice President, Nokia Mobile Software.

This new community will serve those mobile handset manufacturers that have licensed the Series 60 Platform for smart phones. Nokia will provide engineering and technical support to companies of the community, including access to programming interfaces and early releases of new and evolving functionalities.

The Series 60 Platform is a software product for smart phones that Nokia licenses to other mobile-handset manufacturers. Manufacturers will be able to integrate Series 60 into their own phone designs running on top of the Symbian OS. The Series 60 Platform includes mobile browsing, multimedia messaging and content downloading, as well as a host of personal information management and telephony applications. In addition, the software platform includes a complete and modifiable user interface library. The current licensees of the Series 60 are Nokia, Panasonic Mobile Communications, Samsung, Sendo, and Siemens, representing roughly the 60 percent of the global mobile handset market.
