Shrines of Faith -- In memory of California's legendary Father Junipero Serra

OXNARD, Calif., March 18, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- Monuments commemorate a man throughout history, but good deeds immortalize him forever in the hearts of many. Dubbed Ventura's "Statue of Liberty," by former Mayor Jim Monahan, the story of the well-remembered, unprecedented replication project is dedicated to the people of San Buenaventura (Ventura) and recorded by Catherine Antolino Mervyn's third outing, The Replication of the Father Serra Statue: A Volunteer Community Project (now available through 1stBooks Library).

Brimming with vivid illustrations of the unique carving-engineering project, Mervyn's work includes chronicles on the history and foundations of the various statues of the legendary Franciscan priest, Father Junipero Sierra.

Known as the founder of nine of California's 21 historical missions, Father Serra's legacy continues to be acknowledged throughout the country. However, it is only in San Buenaventura where you can find three kinds of magnificent monuments in his memory: one made from concrete, one of wood, and one of bronze.

Father Serra's valiant works and achievements earned him the respect and devotion of millions worldwide. The Replication of the Father Serra Statue not only gives readers rich insights on the traditions of the people of San Buenaventura, it also provides young readers with a closer look on the development of the Franciscan mission.

A native Italian who has lived in America since she was 13, author Catherine Antolino Mervyn writes of the historic construction of three legendary shrines in honor of the revered Father Serra. Mervyn served in the U.S. military for two years during World War II. Afterwards, she taught in elementary schools in Ohio, New Mexico and California. Her first book: A Tower in the Valley, The History of Santa Church was published in 1989, followed by Historic Moments With California's Federation of Women's Clubs. The Replication of the Father Serra Statue is Mervyn's latest release. She now lives with her husband in Oxnard, Calif.
