Negotiating the War - New Book Helps Parents Minimize the Pain of Divorce

PACIFIC PALISADES, Calif., March 21, 2003 (PRIMEZONE) -- The screams of his parents come piercing through the door as the little boy hides under his covers. Downstairs, World War III rages in his living room. He tries not to listen, but the awful words still find their way inside his mind, and he feels their sharpness.

Every year in the United States, over one million marriages disintegrate into divorce, involving approximately one million children. Before, during and after the divorce, many parents expose their children to massive doses of spiteful anger and vile conflict causing great pain to their children. In 1981, the California State Legislature enacted a bill that required mediation for all parents prior to any child custody or visitation trial. Regarding Dr. Florence Bienenfeld's new book, Child Custody Mediation: Techniques for Mediators, Judges, Attorneys, Counselors and Parents (now available through 1stBooks Library), the late notable Dr. Carl Whitaker, former professor of psychiatry, University of Wisconsin, stated in his foreword, "Florence Bienenfeld has done the world of divorce court proceedings an unusual favor. Her book is both good reading and an aid to wise decision making."

A third party can be helpful in child custody situations. The mediator minimizes the damage done to children by offering parents a chance to settle their differences with help. Bienenfeld describes in both action and detail. Using five vivid case studies, she takes the reader from the beginning, through the preliminary conference, parental interviews, child interviews and the family conference. She carries the reader through the final stages including the concluding parental conference, the negotiated agreement and the wrap-up conference. Bienenfeld, through her well-selected examples and tips, presents the amazing power and transformation possible during the mediation process.

Bienenfeld has been a family counselor for over 30 years. She has served as a Senior Family Counselor/Mediator for Family Court Services, Superior Court, California, Los Angeles County for 11 years. As well as counseling thousands of families, she is the author of three other books: My Mom and Dad are Getting a Divorce (1stBooks Library), Helping Your Child Through Divorce (Hunter House) and Do-It-Yourself Conflict Resolution for Couples (Career Press/New Page Books). She currently lives in Pacific Palisades, Calif., where she has a private practice.
